The Library, Documentation and Information Department of the
ASC has compiled a web dossier on African cinema to coincide
with the film festival
Africa in the Picture, which is being held from 3-14
September 2003. More than eighty feature films, shorts,
documentaries and videos made over the past four years in Africa
and the African diaspora are being shown in four Dutch cities
[Amsterdam, Rotterdam, the Hague and Eindhoven). The ASC will
screen one of the festival films in its
CinemAfrica programme.
The dossier is based mainly on the ASC library collection and
contains titles of:
- books
- articles, and
- periodicals on African film
and video published in the last ten years. Each title links
directly to the corresponding record in the
online
catalogue, which provides details about each title and
abstracts of articles and edited works.
- The dossier further contains a list of
videos from the ASC collection, all of them screened at
earlier Africa in the Picture festivals,
- as well as a selection of web resources.
For information about the dossier and the availability of
titles please email us at:
asclibrary@ascleiden.nl or phone: +31 (0)71 5273354.
Introduction
Soon after its invention in France in 1895, cinema came to
Africa, where its development was shaped by European colonialism
and the postcolonial aftermath. Until independence, films in
Africa were financed, directed and distributed by Europeans and
Americans. It was only after independence in the 1960s that an
independent, indigenous film industry was able to develop.
During the colonial era Africans were depicted by Western
film makers as exotic and wild and there was a total lack of
interest in native African culture. However, France's goal of
assimilating colonial subjects in its colonies into French
culture provided aspiring African film directors with
opportunities to become involved in film production. After
independence these film directors took the lead in African
cinema. One of them, Ousmane Sembene (Senegal, b. 1923), is seen
as the father of African cinema and his 1963 'Borom Sarret' is
regarded as the first African film. Other famous directors
include Djibril Diop Mambety, also from Senegal, Youssef Chanine
from Egypt, Med Hondo from Mauritania, Idrissa Ouedraogo and
Gaston Kabore from Burkina Faso and Souleymane Cisse from Mali.
By 1973 African films were already prominent at the Cannes Film
Festival. Burkina Faso, although a relatively poor country, was
the undisputed centre of African film. The films were mainly
concerned with issues of culture and national identity with the
directors wanting to focus on the cultural legacy of the African
peoples through films, as well as to use these films in the
development of African nations.
Film production also flourished in Algeria and Tunisia, while
the Egyptian film industry is one of the oldest on the
continent. However, in the 1980s, these industries became
increasingly dominated by films made for general audiences.
Among the former British colonies, only Nigeria has built a
sizable film industry, thanks largely to the efforts of director
Ola Balogun who adapted Yoruba plays for cinema and who, between
1972 and 1982, produced nearly a film a year. Nowadays video
films are the major art form in Nigeria. The South African film
industry was ostracized for a long time within the world of
African cinema because it was dominated by white film makers who
frequently used film to reinforce racial divisions. The first
black director was Gibson Kente, who released an anti-apartheid
film in 1976. At the moment South Africa is taking the lead on
the African continent in the production and distribution of
films.
