From 24 January to 14 February 2004, the 24th edition of Africa's
premier soccer showcase, the African Cup of Nations, was held in Tunis.
To mark this occasion, the Library, Documentation and Information
Department of the African Studies Centre has compiled a web dossier on
African sport. It contains a selection of titles from the ASC library's
online catalogue as well as selected
web resources on African sport in general and soccer in particular.
The dossier covers titles of monographs, articles and chapters from
edited works. They are arranged in three sections:
- Sport and Society
- Sport Policies and
Politics
- African Soccer
Each title in the dossier links directly to the corresponding record
in the
online catalogue, which provides a more detailed description of the titles as
well as abstracts of articles and edited works. For further information,
please email us at

Introduction
Since the late 1950s, Africa has made its presence felt in global
sports. The continent's sports stars have made a particular impact on
international soccer (football). African performances at the football
World Cup and the Olympics show that Africa's most vibrant soccer
nations have emerged as notable challengers to the traditional
preeminence of Europe and South America. These performances on the field
have been matched by the improving profile of Africa within the
governance of world soccer. The inception of the African Cup of Nations
Championship and other regional and continental sports competitions did
not only envisage the development of sports, but also the creation and
fostering of a sense of continental cooperation.
| | | | The Confederation of African Football (CAF) was
established in 1957 to stage the inaugural African Cup of
Nations. Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia took part in the first
tournament after South Africa was expelled for refusing to send
a mixed-race team to Sudan. The 1960s were a time of expansion
for the CAF, and a decade when the Cup of Nations grew in
importance.
The tournament is held every two years and the number of
teams participating in the finals has continually increased,
reaching 16 for the first time in 1998. Over the years, West
African players have ended North Africa's dominance of the
continent's favourite sport. Cameroon beat Nigeria in
2000 and retained the title by beating Senegal in 2002.

first appearance: Rwanda, Zimbabwe and Benin. By the end of the first
round, the 2004 tournament had already provided a lot of attacking
football, with more goals scored than in the entire previous tournament.
The presence of most of Africa's key strikers in Tunisia has contributed
to this improvement. In the quarter-finals Cameroon's hopes of a third
successive African Cup of Nations title ended, while Nigeria secured a
place in the semi-finals, together with Morocco, Mali, and the host
country Tunisia.
