This dossier has been compiled to coincide with the lecture series
Ubuntu, of denken vanaf de andere kant. In gesprek met Afrikaanse
filosofen (Ubuntu, or thinking from the other side; conversations
with African philosophers) which is being organized by:
- the Dutch cultural centre De
Rode Hoed
- in collaboration with the philosophy journal
Filosofie Magazine
- and the Dutch organizations VU-podium and Cordaid.
The programme consists of four sessions in the period January-April
2003, during which African and Dutch philosophers are meeting to discuss
themes from African philosophy. The African philosophers invited to
speak are Mogobe B. Ramose (South Africa), Sophie B. Oluwole
(Nigeria), Kwasi Wiredu (Ghana), and Paulin J. Hountondji
(Benin).
| | | This dossier on African philosophy contains a selection
of titles from the ASC library's online catalogue as well as
selected web resources on African philosophy. It begins with
lists of the publications by Hountondji, Oluwole, Ramose and
Wiredu that can be found in the library's collection. This is
followed by a selection of monographs and articles on African
philosophy published in the last ten years, and a list of
periodicals on philosophy. The focus is on works about "African
philosophy" in general rather than particular philosophies, for
example, Akan philosophy or Kenyan philosophy. Titles are
arranged chronologically, by year of publication, and
alphabetically within each year. The
library catalogue
provides details about each title and abstracts of most
publications. For information about the dossier and the
availability of titles please email us at:

the philosophers
One of the leading African philosophers, Paulin J. Hountondji
was born in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (1942), but his roots are in Benin.
He studied at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris and taught
philosophy at various universities in France and Africa before he was
appointed as Professor of Philosophy at the National University of Benin
in Cotonou. In 1976, he published his main work entitled Sur la
philosophie africaine (African philosophy: myth and reality, 2nd
English ed. 1996). In the 1990s, Hountondji served in the Benin
government as Minister of Education and Minister of Culture and
Communication but later he returned to university teaching. Hountondji
attacks a myth popularized by ethnophilosophers that there is an
indigenous, collective African philosophy separate and distinct from the
Western philosophical tradition. He argues that a genuine African
philosophy must assimilate and transcend the theoretical heritage of
Western philosophy. Hountondji is currently involved in the
establishment of an African institute for advanced studies (Centre
africain des hautes études).
Sophie B. Oluwole studied in Moscow, Cologne, Lagos and
Ibadan, where she obtained her PhD in 1984. Once the Acting Head of the
Department of Philosophy at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, and
President of the Nigerian Philosophical Association, she recently
retired as Professor of Philosophy at the University of Lagos. She is
the founder of Imódòye: Journal of African Philosophy and editor
of the African Philosophy Series published by Excel (Lagos).
She has published on Yoruba oral traditions and philosophy, in
particular the Ifa corpus, and on African perspectives on women
and development.
Mogobe B. Ramose obtained his PhD at the Katholieke
Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, in 1983. He stayed there as a research
fellow between 1983-1986. From 1986-1990 he worked as a Senior Jacobsen
Research Fellow at the University of Zimbabwe, before going back to
Leuven as a research fellow at the Center for Research into the
Foundations of Law at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven from 1991-1993.
From 1993-1996 he was a lecturer in the Philosophy of Law, at the
Katholieke Universiteit Brabant, Tilburg, in the Netherlands. Having
been Professor of Philosophy at the University of Venda from 1997-1998,
Ramose is now Professor of Philosophy at the University of South Africa
(UNISA), Pretoria. His area of research is philosophy, political
science and international relations. A focus of his work is ubuntu,
the southern African concept in which philosophy, ontology and
ethics are combined. He derives his views on reparations to be paid for
crimes committed under colonialism from ubuntu conceptions of
justice. In his view, the ubuntu African understanding of justice
as balance and harmony demands the restoration of justice by reversing
the dehumanizing consequences of colonial conquest and by eliminating
racism.

ISVW | Kwasi Wiredu (Kumasi, Ghana, 1931) is Professor of
Philosophy at the University of South Florida, Tampa, and former
Head of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Ghana.
He did his undergraduate studies at the University of Ghana,
Legon and received his doctorate from Oxford University in
1960. He then taught at the University of Keele but after one
year returned to his home country to the University of Ghana,
where he taught philosophy for 23 years. His main interests are
African philosophy, epistemology, philosophy of logic,
metaphysics and the philosophy of mind.
Wiredu's project of consensual ethics is somehow
representative of current mainstream positions in the African
philosophical discussion in so far as the results of the debate
on the existence of African philosophy (and on the question of
what is 'African' in African philosophy) have significantly
influenced this approach. He critically refers to African
traditions and worldviews as well as to the European tradition
of philosophizing. His exposition of the principles of African
traditional philosophy is not purely theoretical because he
shows how certain aspects of African political thought may be
applied to the practical resolution of some of Africa's most
pressing problems.Publications
