Printable version

Seminar

Date:October 6, 2010
Time:12.00-14.00
Place:Perszaal, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Hague. Please bring identification
Speaker(s): Dr Udesh Pillay, Executive Director Centre for Service Delivery (CSD), Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) Pretoria, South Africa

Dr Pillay will speak about the legacy of the Worldcup in South Africa. He will treat questions like: How can major sports events like the World Cup serve developmental goals? How to prevent these new or renovated stadiums from becoming white elephants? Did South Africa indeed make too many concessions to FIFA, to the extent of partially ceding its sovereignty? Who are the winners and the losers of the World Cup, outside the pitch? Apart from the socio-economic impact, other aspects would also be of interest: did it infuse SA with new energy and a new sense of purpose, did it boost nation building, is there a backlash the day after?

His abstract will follow later.

Registration: 1 October at the latest at: DAF@minbuza.nl
Registration is obligatory. If you have registered but are unable to attend please inform us as soon as possible.
