Main researcher Stephen Ellis is a historian, with a broad range of interests in contemporary history and politics. His most recent book, coauthored with Solofo Randrianja, is a general history of Madagascar. His longer-term research concerns the history of Nigerian organized crime. In addition to his work at the Afrika Studie Centrum, from 1 December 2008, Stephen Ellis is working for two days a week as the Desmond Tutu professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Free University of Amsterdam. Stephen Ellis is a member of various editorial boards, including of the journal African Affairs, of which he is a former editor.
