Rhode Bath-Schéba Makoumbou was born in 1976 in Brazzaville, Republic of
Congo. Her father, painter David Makoumbou, initiated her in the art of
painting. In her paintings and sculptures Rhode emphasizes social activities
of African women. She aims to preserve African traditions through art, by
creating representations of rural life scenes, with an emphasis on
celebrating the essential role of women in these societies. Her works excel
in realistic and cubic style. Generally, she uses knives to create her oil
paintings. In 2003 she started her international career.
The paintings and sculptures are on display in the corridors and the library of the African
Studies Centre in the Pieter de la Court building, Wassenaarseweg 52,
Leiden. They are for sale, with prices ranging from € 600 to € 1400. The
exhibition is open weekdays from 9:00–17:00 until 28 June 2010. Feel free
