'Self-impressions between Hope and Despair'

Printable version

This exhibit is now over. The prices, dates, places and external hyperlinks on this page are not maintained and may no longer be accurate.

The exhibition by the Sudanese artist Fawzia Yousif El Mamoun was officially opened by Councillor de Boer on Tuesday 8 March. The paintings are hanging in the corridors and the library of the African Studies Centre in the Pieter de la Court building.

The exhibition will only close on 20 June so feel free to come and take a look! Fawzia Yousif El Mamoun was born in 1949 in Omdurman, Sudan and graduated from the College of Fine and Applied Art at the University of Sudan in Khartoum. She also did several painting courses in England. She arrived in the Netherlands as a refugee in 1999 but this enforced move has not prevented her from painting, or affected her creativity. At the African Studies Centre she is exhibiting more than 40 of her paintings, all of which reflect her visions of Dutch and African society. Her paintings vary in style: some are abstract, others realistic. She uses techniques like color overlapping, projecting forms with brush strokes, and adding materials such as salt or sand to produce interesting effects. All the paintings are for sale and range in price from €250 to €800.
