This exhibit is now over. The prices, dates, places and external
hyperlinks on this page are not maintained and may no longer be accurate.
The new exhibition at the African Studies Centre features photographs
taken by Hanneke de Vries earlier this year when she visited the Himbas in
northern Namibia, various South African townships and also the fashionable
Barrydale Karoo Hotel in South Africa.
By interacting closely with the people she wants to photograph, she is able
to build up a relationship of trust that allows her to show a person’s real
character. She enjoys taking a series of photographs on one subject so she
can focus on it in more depth. For example, this year she spent time with
the South African girls’ national football team and also with some opera
singers in Botswana, and she followed the daily life of a Zimbabwean woman
over a period of time.
Hanneke de Vries is a freelance photographer and journalist. Her photos have
been published in magazines and annual reports and on websites and have
also been used on cards and CDs.
More details about her work can be found on her website:

Hanneke’s photographs are on display in the corridors and the library of the
African Studies Centre in the Pieter de la Court building, Wassenaarseweg
52, Leiden. They are for sale, with prices ranging from € 100 to € 300. The
exhibition is open weekdays from 9:00–17:00 until 30 September 2009. Feel
free to come and take a look.
