This exhibit is now over. The prices, dates, places and external hyperlinks on this page are not maintained and may no longer be accurate.

Yosief Habties Indrias was born in Eritrea in 1977, where he studied architecture and then worked as an architect. For some years he has been living and painting in Kampala, Uganda. Indrias is inspired by the original Byzantine and Abessynian art that was found in Ethiopia more than 1000 years ago, especially the murals in old churches that he would like to share with the modern world in the form of contemporary art.

Daniel Kambere Tsongo was born in Congo in 1964 and completed his higher education in plastic arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa. Tsongo draws his inspiration from black African art, from daily life and contemporary art in general. He works in Congo and at times in Uganda, and has exhibited in several African and European countries. His work shows the reality of war and violence but, most of all, a longing for peace and understanding.

Yolé!Africa is a centre for culture and art in Kampala, Uganda that was founded in 2000 by anthropologist Ellen Lammers and artist Petna Ndaliko Katondolo.   Refugees from Congo, Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea, together with Ugandan youngsters, occupy themselves with painting, dance and acting at the centre. From every piece of art that the artists sell, they give 25% to Yolé!Africa to help maintain the centre. The centre receives financial support from the “Stichting Ijayo” which also runs an educational project for young refugees in Uganda.

The paintings hanging in the corridors and the library of the African Studies Centre in the Pieter de la Court building, Wassenaarseweg 52, Leiden are all from the Yolé!Africa centre. The exhibition is open weekdays from 9:00 – 17:00 until 31 March 2009. Feel free to come and take a look!
