Joe Soly (1961, Dakar) attended art school in Dakar where he studied
under Fode Camara and Kasy. In 1983 he joined the National Association for
Visual Art (ANAPS) in Senegal.
His style is figurative and abstract and his art mainly comes into being
through improvisation. Joe uses oils and acrylics, often combined with sand,
cardboard and sacking. By using different styles and techniques, he manages
to express diversity in sources of inspiration and interests. Joe is always
searching for new possibilities to interlace western modern art with his
African roots because he feels that all civilizations are complementary and
everything is just a small part of the universe. He uses this basic
assumption to let different materials act as an active part of the whole,
each with its own rhythm. This adds another dimension to his art.
Art is one big voyage of discovery without boundaries for Joe and his
creativity gives him the means to express this. He would like to invite you
to join him on this journey by visiting his exhibition in the corridors of
the African Studies Centre.
The paintings hanging in the corridors and the library of the African
Studies Centre in the Pieter de la Court building, Wassenaarseweg 52, Leiden
are all for sale.
The exhibition is open weekdays from 9:00 – 17:00 until 1 May 2007. Feel
free to come and take a look!
