Amazwi Abesifazane / Voices of Women

Printable version

December 2002 - April 2003

This exhibit is now over. The prices, dates, places and external hyperlinks on this page are not maintained and may no longer be accurate.

Unframed memory cloths are for sale at the African Studies Centre for 50 euro each. All proceeds go to the Tito Zungu Trust Fund.

The Amazwi Abesifazane - Voices of Women project encourages African women to create memory cloths reflecting on their experiences during apartheid. The cloths of 1000 women will become a permanent South African archive and an ongoing industry will market additional cloths and products that the women produce.

Chokosani Sibisi

Ntombi Agnes Mbatha

Thokosani's grandparents were attacked by robbers, but the dog caught the attackers, they got away but they left the goods behind. So they were saved by the dog.

In 1992 my husband and I were going into town. Our son of 20 asked us to buy him some shoes. We bought him the shoes, but when we returned home our son was not there and then we heard he had been gunned down. We were so sad and also we now have the shoes and no one to wear them.
