The paintings by
Hamed Ouattara that are currently on display at the
African Studies Centre are kindly on loan courtesy of Galerie 23 Hedendaagse
Afrikaanse Kunst on the Nieuwe Herengracht in Amsterdam
(www.de40eurogalerie.nl/galerie23).
Born in Ouagadougou in 1971, Hamed Ouattara is a self-taught artist who is
inspired by his home country of Burkina Faso and its warm, natural colours.
His works are also influenced by and include ideas from the countries he has
visited and where he has had successful exhibitions. These include the
United States, France, the Netherlands, Italy, African countries such as
Niger and of course Burkina Faso. All his works have familiar and
traditional elements in them but at the same time aspects that seem far from
one’s own culture. These combine to give his work depth and a certain
freedom.
What first strikes one is the colour in his paintings – the reds and yellows
but also the contrasting African blues, and figures emerge from the blocks
of colour. Some of the figures are recognizable, others are more static,
even religious, and yet others have an element of fantasy surrounding them.
In many of the works there are written but illegible (business-like) texts
which add a tension to the paintings. And others feature African forms and
shapes from the artist’s own country.
The paintings hanging in the corridors and the library of the African
Studies Centre in the Pieter de la Court building, Wassenaarseweg 52, Leiden
are all for sale. They range in price from €550 to €1600.
The exhibition is open weekdays from 9:00 – 17:00 until 1 November 2006.
Feel free to come and take a look!
