Land Reform, Food security and Stability in Africa: lessons from Zimbabwe, South Africa and Kenya.

The Fast Track Land Reform Programme (FTLRP) has created a new agrarian structure in Zimbabwe. In this seminar, Prosper Matondi (Ruzivo Trust) will discuss what this land reform has brought Zimbabwe, both from a national perspective as well as the perspective of the land reform beneficiaries. What opportunities and constraints do they experience in developing their new farms and livelihoods? What has been the effect of the land reforms on national food security and peace and stability in the country? Lionel Cliffe will contextualize Matondi’s account by comparing the Zimbabwean experience with post-colonial land reforms in Kenya and South Africa.

Prosper Matondi (PhD Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences) is the director of Ruzivo Trust, a Harare-based research and advocacy NGO working on land issues in Zimbabwe.

Lionel Cliffe is Emeritus Professor of Politics; Honorary Research Fellow, Geography at the Centre for African Studies at the University of Leeds (UK).



Land Hervorming, Voedselzekerheid en Stabiliteit in Afrika: ervaringen in Zimbabwe, Zuid-Afrika en Kenia.

Ruim tien jaar na de grootschalige landonteigeningen van commerciële boerderijen in Zimbabwe is er een nieuwe agrarische structuur ontstaan. In dit seminar bespreekt Prosper Matondi (Ruzivo Trust) wat deze hervorming Zimbabwe heeft gebracht; zowel in op nationaal niveau, als vanuit het perspectief van de boeren die nieuw land hebben gekregen. Welke mogelijkheden en beperkingen ondervinden deze boeren om een nieuw bestaan op te bouwen? En wat voor effect heeft de landhervorming gehad op de nationale voedselzekerheid en vrede en veiligheid in het land en de regio? Lionel Cliffe zal het verhaal van Matondi in regionaal perspectief plaatsen door een vergelijking te maken met post-koloniale landhervormingen in Kenia en Zuid-Afrika.
