What is LinkedIn
LinkedIn for academia
LinkedIn can be used to:
• list your professional expertise
• show your work experience and training
• share publications and presentations
• build a professional network of colleagues and peers
• network by introducing yourself to colleagues and peers (still unknown to you)
• demonstrate or acquire knowledge by taking part in or starting group discussions
• and much more ...
After activating a LinkedIn account, complete your profile with relevant professional information, a brief explanation of yourself and a photo (optional). Based on this information, LinkedIn searches for relevant relations for your network. In addition, you can find (or invite) existing contacts by linking to your different email accounts. It is also possible to import contacts from Outlook.

Being found
A ‘public profile’ makes your LinkedIn page easy for others to find. You can also select a personalized ‘Vanity URL’ for your public profile. If you provide the URL with your first and last name, it is quickly recognized in the results of a search engine (for example, http://nl.linkedin.com/in/mrdoortmont). A profile can be partially disclosed if you only want to publish information, for example, about your present job or most recent studies.

LinkedIn groups
Universities, colleges and research institutes are increasingly being represented as a group on LinkedIn. Join them to keep abreast of news, appeals and announcements or to follow or start discussions.
